Multicultural Lesson Plan using "All About My Jobs"

Level: 2-8 grades
Objective: Promote multicultural awareness
1. Introduce to the students the book “All about my jobs” , talk about the front and back cover, make predictions about the book with the students. Read the story.
2. Look at the Venezuela and US maps on page 2 and identify with students the maps of those countries on the Globe. Look for their location on the Globe.
3. Make a list of the countries located in South America (Venezuela, Colombia, Guyana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and Chile).
4. Plan an imaginary trip to South America. Ask the students to work in groups of four, and pick a country to visit.
5. Tell the student that in order to be able to travel to other countries, people need a passport. Make a passport with the students using construction paper. Take a picture of each student or students can make their own self-portraits.
6. Ask the students to start planning their trip (searching by internet, visiting the library, watching videos).
7. Ask the students to make a project of the country they choose (Allow one week).
The projects have to include: Language of the country, native food and costume, important cities, pictures, wonders and exotic places.
8. Once the projects are ready, students and teacher will go through the passport and plan a “Traveling around South America party” where each child dressed like the people from the country they chose and present their projects while the rest of the groups visit each country. Students and teacher make native foods and play native games.
